Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to search for the meaning and essence of the Horticulture Therapy through the elderly with stroke.

Methods: The participants of this study were 5 stroke patients with hemiplegia. The data were collected between 7 and 22 November, 2009. through face-to-face personal interviews. Their experiences were followed using the hermeneutics phenomenological method developed by van Manen: focusing on the meaning of experiences; existential investigating the phenomenon; reflecting; and writing with an hermeneutic phenomenology approach.

Results: The essential themes were associated with the experiences of the horticultural therapy were as follows: "Shake off negative thoughts and freshen up one"s mind" "The important opportunity to bring back old good memories" "To re-activate the hardened body" "To be happy at a glance" "Enjoy without difficulty" and "To be depressed upon an unsuccessful result".

Conclusion: It contributes a deeper understanding of the meaning and essence of the horticultural therapy of the elderly with stroke. On the basis of this understanding, this result implies the requirements of the followings; The holistic approach in accordance with the demand of each individuals and the development of the nursing approach program considering positive and negative factor of the Horticulture Therapy.
